Here at p站视频 our favourite way to get kids started coding is by taking it 肉体撞击声噗嗤噗嗤水声. 肉体撞击声噗嗤噗嗤水声 coding 太子压在龙床上承欢h help kids to develop the fundamentals without the need for a computer.

Basic coding concepts such as algorithms, loops, branches and sequencing can all be learned through a variety of offline coding 太子压在龙床上承欢h and understanding these concepts has many benefits beyond the computer.

So let’s get started today with a fun way to taking coding concepts outside using Walkie Talkies.

Coding Concepts Covered:

  • Algorithm
  • Sequence
  • Branching (optional)

Materials Needed:

  • A pair of walkie talkies – check out these awesome kid friendly ones here.
  • An object to act as the ‘treasure’ – this could be anything from a toy or ball, something found in nature or even an ‘x’ marks the spot written in chalk.

Object of the Game:

The object is the game is for Player 1 to direct Player 2 from the ‘start’ to the ‘finish’ using only their verbal instructions given through a walkie talkie. Player 2 can not use gestures or pointing. By using the walkie-talkies Player 2 can stand far away so as not to inadvertedly given gesture hints.

How to Play:

Step One: Eacher player gets a walkie talkie. You can practice communicating back and forth on it to ensure each player knows how it works.

Step Two: Player 2 hides the ‘secret object’ from player 1. The farther away that Player 2 hides the object, the more challenging the game will be.

Step Three: Player 1 starts at a designated starting point. Player 2 should be far enough away from Player 1 that they can’t give hints with their body language (no pointing or waving towards the object!) Player 2 needs to be able to see Player 1 so that they can give correct instructions.

Step Four: Player 2 needs to give instructions to player 1 using ONLY WORDS to help player 1 reach the secret object.

Coding Concept: Algorithms

Player 1’s instructions are called the ‘Secret Object Algorithm’

We can teach students that an ‘Algorithm’ is a set of instructions given to computers to complete a task. We can think of them like instructions or receipes. Player 1 is giving Player 2 the ‘Secret Object Algorithm’ to find the object.

Player 1 needs to give clear concise directions, just like a computer programmer would.

In giving the instructions it’s important for Player 2 to give the correct sequence. Sequence refers to the order of the steps. If Player 2 gives the instructions out of order then Player 1 will end up in the wrong place!

Example of a ‘Secret Object Algorithm’

  • Move forward 20 steps
  • Turn left and then move forward 10 steps
  • Enter through the door
  • Take 15 steps forward
  • Open the white cupboard
  • Grab the secret object!

Coding Concept Two: Sequence (Challenge!)

To make the game harder, you can have Player 2 give multiple steps at once without pausing for Player 1 to complete the steps first. This is how real code works. A computer programmer writes a program (set of instructions) and then runs the code. By looking at the final result the computer programmer will know if their instructions worked or not. If there is an error and the result wasn’t expected the programmer has to ‘debug’ their algorithm.

Have player 2 give 5 steps in the algorithm all at once. Player 1 will follow the directions and see if they end up in the right place. If there is a mistake in the algorithm then point out the ‘bug’ and have player 2 ‘debug’ their instructions to that Player 1 is in the correct space.

Coding Concept 3: Branching (Challenge!)

In coding programmers use If/Then statements to program different outcomes based on the circumstances. We can use If/Then statements to play a version of this activity that is similar to the classic ‘hot/cold’ game that you may have played as a kid.

I’m sure many of you played the ‘hot/warm/cold’ game as a kid. Someone hides an object and you instruct a friend towards the object by calling out ‘cold’ when they head in the wrong direction, ‘warm’ when they head in the right direction and ‘hot’ when they are very close to the objet.

This game uses IF/THEN statement.

IF the person is heading toward the object THEN you yell ‘warm’

IF the person is heading away from the object THEN you yell ‘cold’

IF the person is very close to the the object THEN you yell ‘hot’

Now it’s time for some fun! Have your students come up with their own unique words to replace ‘warm’, ‘cold’ and ‘hot’ in the IF/THEN statements above. Silly (but appropriate!) words are encouraged and will get the kids more engaged.

Students can still use Walkie Talkies to direct Player 1 towards the secret object. This time Player 1 starts moving in one direction and Player 2 uses the IF/THEN words to direct them towards the object.

Final Thoughts

There you have it! Kids can learn about algorithms, sequencing and even branches with a simple seek and find game. There are so many ways to get kids thinking about coding concepts without a screen. Check out our other 肉体撞击声噗嗤噗嗤水声 ideas here.
