Children may come to the makerspace with a classroom teacher, or teachers may use this as release time for the teachers. Makerspaces are a bit of a utopia in the current education climate. Imagine a place where children and adults come to learn but not in the traditional sense. Secret #4: A closet will do just fine.

Space is often a premium in schools and can be a hurdle to creating a makerspace. To host your own makerspace or STEAM lab, you don’t really need a lot of space. A rolling cart or a storage closet with space outside can work just as well as an elaborate high-tech innovation lab. Working in small spaces just requires some organization and thoughtful planning about how you will use the space and store materials. Using plastic tubs to organize and label will allow the students and staff to easily access the materials they may need while keeping order.

Secret #3: It isn’t chaos; it is organized chaos.

In a makerspace there are lots of loose parts, lots of children and adults, and the combination of people, materials, and excitement leads to organized chaos. The teacher or facilitator of the makerspaces responsibility is to set up opportunities for learning similar to provocations so that the chaos is indeed organized. Similar to toy rotations where not all materials (or toys) are available to students at any given moment, the teachers or facilitators should carefully select the materials in the makerspace so they pertain to the task or challenge at hand and it doesn’t become a free-for-all. This helps with clean-up and organization and overall calmness. Here is a sample schedule in the makerspace:

Sample Makerspace Classroom Routine:

Whole group meeting to introduce the challenge/problem/materials (5-10 minutes).  What will they be doing? How many people will be in the group? What expectations do you have for behavior and treatment of the materials?

Explore the materials and the challenge (20-25 minutes).  Brainstorming and sketching a plan for their design or how they will tackle the problem. Begin building and testing their design.

Present findings (5-10 minutes)  What was challenging, and what was successful with their designs? How might they improve their designs based on others’ designs?

Clean-up (5 minutes).  Clean up materials and workspace.

Secret #2: Children will fail … often.

Well-crafted STEAM challenges invite and actually encourage failure. There is usually more than one way to solve the problem, and oftentimes, the way that the child initially tries to solve the problem fails. And that is ok. When children fail is when they are actually learning the most. It is from those moments of failure that children learn to persevere, that they can do hard things, and that they are able to solve complex problems. Failure is the best opportunity for creating and fostering a growth mindset. One of the simplest ways to turn an “I can’t…” statement into one that encourages growth is to add the word “yet” to that statement. For example, if a student is frustrated because they can’t get their paper circuit to light up the LED, and they say, “I can’t figure out why my LED won’t light up!” Have them rephrase it to include the word, “yet” by saying, “I can’t figure out why my LED won’t light up yet!”  This shows the child that they are capable of solving the problem and that they may just need to step back from the situation for a minute or they may need to consult a friend/classmate to troubleshoot their circuit.

That is a bold statement, but one that is absolutely true. Why? It is actually quite simple. When children have opportunities to do things that are hands-on, challenging, have multiple solutions, and are fun, they all want to do them. Children who get to participate in makerspaces also have an extreme sense of pride and ownership of the space and their work. That pride leads to engagement and ultimate success. This opens the doors to communicate about opportunities for career paths they may not have known existed. Having that exposure to relevant career opportunities gives students purpose and direction for their schooling.

Here are some simple ways to differentiate and meet the needs of all students.

1. Simplify or complicate the activity.  If you are designing a boat, the simplest form would be just creating a boat that will float. More challenging would be creating a boat that floats and can carry added weight by adding pennies or other objects to the boat, testing its capacity. Further complicating this activity would be creating a boat that can sail the fastest. This would involve knowledge of sails and the ability to calculate speed which involves division. So in this one challenge, we can differentiate it to meet the needs of younger learners (as young as preschool) or older (upper elementary) children.
2. Simplify or complicate the materials. By reducing the number of variables, we make the activity more accessible to more students. This reduces overwhelm and overstimulation too.
3. Create open-ended challenges.  When you create a challenge that has multiple solutions, you allow more students to find success and more opportunities to learn from each other. For example, if the challenge is for students to make a device that would catch an apple that was falling from a tree so it doesn’t hit the ground and break or become damaged, students might make several different kinds of devices. One might make a net-type device, another might make a basket-type device, while another might make a webbing that would act as a cushion to protect the apple from the inevitable fall. The learning that can ensure from examining each others’ designs is huge. Students begin to think critically about which one would probably work better and why and how they might improve their design based on the ideas of their peers.

Creating a makerspace shouldn’t be daunting or scary, and hopefully, these five secrets will help you feel more confident in diving into the wonderful world of STEAM. In a world full of anxiety and pressure, your students will surely thank you for taking a risk and creating such a magical space for them to learn and play.

Advice From Unruly Splats: Introducing Coding to Students

As we navigate another start to a school year, many educators and parents are starting to rethink traditional schooling and what is being taught. With 67% of STEM new jobs being in computing, coding is becoming more and more of a priority for schools, educators, and parents to instill into the next generation of children. Since computer science is still a relatively new subject for K-12 schools, creating a whole new curriculum can seem daunting. However, it doesn’t have to be!

Let’s dive into some advice for introducing coding to students in a low-barrier and fun way!

Learn Coding Through Gamification

When thinking about coding, you may envision students sitting in chairs and staring at their computer screens. Yet, there is more than one way to teach CS. We recommend making it a game! Gamification is a great way to incorporate 欲香欲色天天天综合和网 in the classroom since it’s not only enjoyable but also beneficial for learning and student engagement.

One-fifth grader in that group even said it felt like “opposite day”. These simple flip-in roles promoted student led learning, excitement, and lowered the barrier to learning computer science for everyone!

In a recent study, researchers found that students who were physically active during instruction may have better academic performance, memory, and focus. When introducing coding to your students, think about how you can add in play! This way they will retain the information more effectively but also start associating computer science as fun and exciting to learn!

For example, South Euless Elementary students use Splats to combine coding and physical activity. To make the lesson more engaging, teachers added a competitive element. Students broke out into teams, coded the Unruly Race in Place, and then competed for the most stomps during a set amount of time.

“Students understand that they are in control when coding,” said Angela Brown, Library Media Specialist. “The ‘machine’ can only do what you tell it to do, so if something is not working, go back and check your code. The immediate feedback when their code works is so rewarding. They are having fun while learning.”

When talking with our Unruly Educators, we have found that finding enough time in the day to teach CS is a roadblock for many educators. A solution we have to relieve this problem is by sprinkling coding throughout the day with cross-curricular lesson plans.

Math Games with Splats

We have three different math games that can be used as tools when introducing concepts like place value, addition, and word problems.

1. Place Value: This is a kinesthetic way for students to learn about place value ranging from the ones place all the way to the hundred thousands!
2. Adding Up: The objective of this activity is to find combinations adding up the number displayed on Splat 6. This goal number changes depending on the range set in the code. 
3. The Human Calculator: This activity is ideal for tracking changes in multi-step word problems! The code with answers allows students to self-check.

Music Games with Splats

Cathy Truesdale, a PreK to 4th Grade Music and Performing Arts teacher at Canterbury School in Florida, is leveraging Splats to combine coding, music, and play in her hybrid and distance learning classes.

What is a variable?

You can think of a variable in computer 国产清纯美女高潮出白浆+色 as being like a container. It stores information, or data so that computers can easily retrieve it later. In this activity, we will represent each variable with a jar as it will help us to remember that variables can store things.

What is a Value?

A value is a word for the information stored in a variable. Variables store values and values can include different types of information such as letters, numbers, or words.

Nursery Rhyme Coding Game

In the game, students will be given four nursery rhymes with blank spaces where words are missing. They are our variables and students will need to come up with values (words) to include as options in the rhyme.

Materials needed:

• 3 jars
• Paper scraps for students to write words on
• Printouts of the nursery rhyme (pdf here)

How to play the Nursery Rhyme Coding Game:

There are three variables in our nursery rhyme game. These are:

• Nouns
• Verbs
• Adjective

We could easily call these variables X, Y, and Z however the names we have chosen help us to remember what kind of value to store in a variable.

STEP ONE

Label all three jars with the variable names ‘noun’, ‘verb’, and ‘adjective’.

STEP TWO

Have students come up with a list of values for each of the three variables. Each value can be written on a scrap piece of paper and thrown into the variable jar.

Examples of values for the variable ‘adjective’

• Funny
• Happy
• Creepy
• Silly
• Delicious

STEP THREE

What is Ozobot Classroom?

Ozobot Classroom is similar to the previous Ozobot Classroom Kits as far as the number of robots goes. Ozobot Classroom is only offered with the Evo robot. The kits used to be offered with Bit robots, but the lack of lights, sensors, and Bluetooth features slowly made Bit obsolete.

Because Evo does have Bluetooth capabilities, Ozobot Classroom allows a teacher to connect with from across the room. The (patent pending) Ozobot Classroom Communicator will connect to up 18 Evo’s at once, and allows the teacher to see exactly what is happening with any particular robot in real-time! (The Ozobot Classroom Communicator is also free if you request one from the Ozobot Classroom site!)

Beyond simply connecting the robots to the teacher’s device, Ozobot Classroom has so many features that are going to make teaching coding and computational thinking so much easier. If teachers want to explore but don’t have an Evo, they can still sign up for Ozobot Classroom. Signing up would be a great way to explore the platform, but teachers would need an Evo to take advantage of the features like “Bot Camp” or “Classes”.

How to get started with Ozobot Classroom

When teachers first log in, they will notice a few options on their dashboard. One of the first tiles will be called “Bot Camp”, and is for teachers who have never used any Ozobot before, or maybe who feel like brushing up on their skills. Teachers will also be able to browse the lesson library, or even create their own lessons. Since this platform is brand new, there may not be many lessons in the library right now, but I have a feeling that will change quickly!

The “Lessons” tab is particularly fascinating. I know we talk a lot about how coding and computer science are applicable beyond the computer, but it’s nice to see that idea reinforced within a major product like Ozobot Classroom. There are lessons in the library that cover everything from story sequencing to holidays like Hannukah! Ever thought of coding your Evo to mimic a planet (or planets) in the solar system before? I never had, but what a wonderful way to talk about coding and science in the same lesson!

Another tab teachers will want to use is the “Classes” tab. It is similar to many other online learning systems where teachers con put in students’ names and save the group to be used again later. This feature seems like it would be helpful for teachers in middle or high school when they see multiple classes in a day. Putting students into the “Classes” tab also allows the system to assign the whole class to groups in one click – as opposed to having to assign each individual student. Simply open the class, choose a lesson, and click on “Launch Lesson”. 

Device Connection with Ozobot

Of course, the feature Ozobot Classroom has that everyone is buzzing about is the device connection. When a teacher clicks on the “Device” tab, they are able to connect to one Evo or the whole class set. Once they are paired, teachers can do everything from launch lessons (self-guided learning!) to assign bots to groups of students with one click. While students are working through either a “Color Codes” or “OzoBlockly” lesson, teachers can be monitoring successes and challenges from their screen – allowing them to help when needed!

After the lesson is completed, the teacher will also be able to see a lesson overview. They will also be able to see which groups were struggling, which concepts were mastered, and even which standards the lesson addressed!

I am so excited to see companies moving towards modes of education where coding and computer science are not their own “thing”, but are integrated throughout the school day. Ozobot Classroom even takes teacher comfort into consideration with their “Bot Camp” to help get going on the platform. 

With my two boys getting ready to head into their school years, I can only hope that coding education continues in this direction. We all know that coding education is so much more than computers. It is so nice to see Ozobot Classroom working to show that!

There are plenty of kids coding vocabulary words that can be worked into the everyday language of a classroom. Many of those words describe classroom processes or events that are already occurring, you just get to use a new word to label them!

Project-Based Learning

If you haven’t heard of this popular fad, you should definitely check it out! Project (or Problem) Based Learning (PBL) is the idea that students shouldn’t be given predictable lectures and 丰满爆乳无码一区二区三区, but rather problems to solve. This style of education lends itself nicely to coding for kids.

In coding, the idea is to try, fail, adjust, repeat. This is something introduced with PBL as well. Students are given an “enduring question” and asked to come up with possible solutions. Do you ever model failure for your students? Planned or unplanned, a classroom failure by the teacher is a wonderful way to model for your students how to work through something hard. 

Failure is an integral part of coding and computer science. If coders gave up after their first failed attempt, we would not have 99% of the 欲香欲色天天天综合和网 we have today. As a teacher, you can model failure for your students and make it as routine as washing their hands after a trip to the bathroom. 

Talk through the process of your attempts, failures, and iterations with your students. Show them that failure is part of the process, and to be expected. However, I see the benefits of reduced screen-time, and there are so many apps to monitor screen time built into modern consoles to help parents keep tabs on their little munchkins gaming habits.

I recently bought an Amazon Kindle Fire for my 6 year old. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Amazon has included parental controls on these devices that make it quite easy to ensure your child isn’t getting more screen time than you want them to.

Once you’ve set up a profile for your child, you can assign them a usage time limit that lets you control how long your kid can use the tablet. Once they’ve reached their limit for the day, a message comes up telling the child that they’ve reached their quota. It prevents them from using the tablet further without the parent logging in and altering the usage limit.

What’s great is that you can also set a time limit for different content types, for example, books, videos and, apps.

Another plus is that I found all these apps to limit screen time settings pretty ​intuitive to use and easily accessible: all of the tablet’s basic parental controls can be turned on/off from one screen.

Encourage your kids to set their own screen time rules

“My tip for limiting screen time is to allow children to get involved in setting their own boundaries. This works well for older children. When I realized my 11-year-old was having real problems turning off video games when asked to, I got some advice from a school mentor. 

The mentor suggested encouraging my son to think about what would help him stay calm about screen restrictions. Following this, we asked my son to write down the ideas he had about what would help.

His suggestions included ensuring all devices are put away when not in use and that he needs to ask permission before using them. Consider one big chunk per week

When it comes to screen time and kids it’s all about scheduling and communicating. My son is 10 and LOVES playing video games. He and I discussed it and agreed to three hours a week of video game time. Rather than spread that out in smaller segments throughout the week he would prefer having one large chunk of time so he’s able to advance as far in the games as possible. 

We set aside three solid hours a week each Saturday. His younger siblings are napping and he’s able to play any of his mommy-approved video games for that entire three-hour time slot. 

Not only does this work well for limiting his screen time and avoiding any negative effects of too much time in front of screens, but it also prevents any back and forth struggles throughout the week. He knows when he’s getting his game time. He doesn’t ask for additional time throughout the week. There are no power struggles. No begging. No complaining. No tears. No “it’s not fair.”

We have a clear, well communicated, system and it works well for our family! As his siblings get older they are beginning to have blocks of video game time as well and he enjoys the opportunity to teach them about his favorite games and I love that screen time is transitioning into quality together bonding time between them as well!

Have a consistent daily routine

Our son is only 5 but we’re hoping to teach him about responsible screen use from an early age. Since we’re homeschooling we’re using screens not only for relaxation, but for teaching as well. And we want to make sure he understands the difference. Unless we want to illustrate something with a video or use an app for teaching, the screens are off during the day. I expect this will change as he gets older and starts to use the tablet more for learning. When I start prepping for dinner this is when he can choose to either watch tv or play on the iPad ‘for fun’. Making dinner usually takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour each day, so that’s his screen ‘play’ time. Screen time ends when dinner is ready and we ask him to set the table. It varies how well that works, sometimes it’s so much fun that it’s hard for him turn it off and we have to help him a bit.

We aim to limit our children’s’ use of screens by establishing a routine for using their kid’s tablets. Our children use their tablet very rarely when we are at home and they see their tablet as a device that is used when we are traveling.

At home there is a set routine of only using tablets first thing in the morning and whilst we are preparing the evening meal. They then know that once dinner is ready it has to go away until tomorrow. I am not trying to claim that there are never any complaints but generally, this works quite well.

Having the tablet when traveling comes in amazingly handy so the rules are a bit more relaxed and overall their use is a bit higher and on rare days when we are on a long flight it comes as a treat to have free reign to use it as much as they like!

We feel that overall the balance is quite good and they enjoy playing when they can but have not become so attached to their tablets that they refuse to ever put them down. They are still young so we will need to develop this strategy as they get older in order to realise all of the educational benefits that tablets can offer.

Consider a Screen Time Timer

We embrace 欲香欲色天天天综合和网 at our house, but aim to use it responsibly. The best way we have managed to limit or time the amount of screen time my kids have is to set a timer. Depending what they are doing it may be 15minutes or 30 minutes or even an hour if they are watching a movie or something like that. After the timer goes off they have an opportunity to save and close and then they go outside and jump on our trampoline or something else outdoors.

In order to avoid fighting or whining we actually set two timers. The first one will go off and then the second will go off  2 minutes later. This gives them the opportunity to save and close, or if they are playing a game with others, they have the opportunity to say goodbye etc. But when the second timer goes off their devices need to be put away, not a mad scramble to exit then. It works pretty well as we are consistent with it. Sometimes I get a bit of pushback as they do not want to stop, but they know they will not get it back if they complain about it.

Establish Trade Offs for Screen Time

“In our house, we accomplish screen time limits by ‘trade–offs’. For example, I might say, ‘You can watch an episode once your toys are picked up and put away’. So then the kids know that they have to clean up in order to use the TV. However, it goes much further than just chores. We also want to communicate to them that fun experiences can be balanced with screen time. So another example would be communicating to them that once we arrive at our destination, the phone gets put away. They are aware of this before we ever give them their tablet, so when we park the car, the tablet gets turned off. (Even if they are in the middle of a game or show.)

The most important part of this is being consistent and doing the same thing ourselves. I tell the kids, ‘We will go play outside, and then when we come back in, I will work on the laptop and you can play with your tablets for 30 minutes. Then we all need to make dinner.’ This way we can have screen time throughout the day and the limits don’t make the kids feel like they are being rewarded or punished- it’s just part of our routine to balance screen time with regular life.”

My kids have finally reached the age where they start comparing themselves to their peers and missing out on screen time wasn’t going to fly anymore. It took a bit of brainstorming and trial and error to come up with a system that is working well for our family. 

Now to have screen time the kids need to do a chore to earn credits. I am a big believer in everyone helping with chores just as part of being a member of a family, so I have always avoided paying for chores. The chores that are done are above and beyond what is expected, things like cleaning the car, polishing shoes, sweeping out the garage and cleaning the coffee machine. The kids get the iPad time and learn about earning through work. 

I pay them in quarters which go straight into a labeled jar. My son wanted to buy a new game and by himself asked if he could save his iPad money and exchange it for a game rather than time. I love that he was able to plan and delay gratification to work towards something that he valued.

My son is 3, so we’re just starting to wade into the whole screen time thing… for right now, we don’t have explicit time limits, but we do have other rules. One is no screen time in the morning on weekdays, since we’re all trying to get ready for work and school – this is our biggest rule, because morning screen time has a way of derailing the start of our day!

The second rule is no screen time right before bed. He can have a show or two after school depending on how long dinner prep takes, but screen time right before bed has a way of derailing bedtime (notice a theme here?).

We use binary code to tell our computers what we need from them. In today’s activity, we are going to be using Binary code to create a holiday-themed binary numbers worksheet that is perfect for a classroom activity. 

What does binary mean?

The word binary comes from “Bi-” meaning two. We see “bi-” in words such as “bicycle” because it has two wheels. In binary coding, there are only two digits 0 and 1. It’s hard to image that computers can break down all of their complex functions into simple strings of 0s and 1s!

What is a bit?

For example, 110100 is a Binary Number. A “bit” is a single binary digit. The number 110100 has 6 bits.

All data in a modern digital computer is ultimately stored and transmitted as a series of zeros and ones. Everything from our apps, photos, and programs is transmitted in a series of zeros and ones. 

Every computer is made up of billions of bits. A bit is short for Binary Digits and each bit is read by the computer as either on or off. The on and off values are represented by the numbers 1 and 0. Computers use billions of these sequences to store together complex information.

What is a bitmap?

Bitmap image files are able to store large images by breaking them down into smaller pieces. Bitmaps are composed of a series of small dots called pixels. When looked at up close, a bitmap image might just look like a series of small squares. From afar, however, bitmaps can store complex images.

What is a pixel?

 What’s a pixel, you say? A pixel is a little tiny square that is filled with a color. We use pixels to see pictures on our computers. Each pixel is like a building block used to create something bigger.

Images are everywhere on computers. Some are obvious, like photos on Facebook or the buttons on a website. Others aren’t as obvious like a font is really a collection of binary numbers displayed through pixels.

Binary Numbers Worksheet

In today’s binary coding for kids activity, we’re going to create a design using the binary code system. This free binary code worksheet is a perfect compliment to the computer science classroom. It’s also a great worksheet for kids to practice understanding binary code at home. 

In this activity, we’ll be using binary code to build pixels that will make a holiday image (or an emoji!). We’ll be using white squares to represent the 0 pixels and black squares to represent the 1 pixels in our design.
